I love the East Newk of Fife with its working fishing villages. I spent a clear, chilly day earlier this year – one of those days with a bright blue sky that gives the impression that it must be warmer than it is – over in Crail and Anstruther sketching. This is one of my favourite images from the day. Crail Harbour is fantastic, cradled in what must once have been little more than a cove, the houses around climb up the slopes.

The harbour wall has vertical stones for part of it and they add to the unique character. As it was hardly out of winter the creels were stacked up and, with the tide out, the boats were sitting in the shallows.

This picture was "highly commended" and selected for showing at the Society of All Artists 2024 exhibition in Nottingham in October 2024.
